Frequently Asked Questions

What are the fees for classes and activities at the BBCC?

Fees vary depending on length of class, instructor and on whether the classes are targeted for foreign visitors or for locals. Fees for Mexican nationals are very low so that families with low incomes can afford to participate. English language classes are 1 hour in length and meet twice a week. The fee is approximately $1 US per class. The BBCC will accept students who can not afford the fees.

What is a typical class size?

Classes vary depending on space and topic. Most language classes are limited to no more than 10 students. Yoga often attracts 15 to 20 people. Guest speaker lectures may attract as many as 30 or 40 people.

What kinds of bilingual books are found at the BBCC?

The BBCC has a good selection of bilingual story books for children, which have greatly enhanced the Saturday morning story hours. There are also books appropriate for youth and adults but these are in shorter supply. Additional bilingual books are needed and donations deeply appreciated. The BBCC website lists our currently-available favorite books, along with titles of bilingual books that we hope to have in the future.

How are classes formed?

Efforts are made to form classes comprised of age-matched students who are at approximately the same level of learning. For example beginning English or Spanish language students will study separately from more advanced students. And children study separately from adults. Efforts are also made to schedule classes that fit with the school schedules of the local children, and with high season vacation schedules of part-time residents.

How are teachers selected?

Because enhancing bilingualism in Bucerias is one of the core missions of the organization, the BBCC actively seeks out skilled Spanish or English language teachers. Potential teachers are interviewed, their teaching skills and past experience evaluated and their time availability considered. Many of our teachers volunteer their services at no charge to the BBCC. Others charge privately for classes but donate a percentage of their tuition to the BBCC. Many instructors, for example yoga instructors, dance instructors and cooking teachers, approach the BBCC offering to share their expertise in a particular field. These unexpected opportunities result in an ever-changing palette of interesting courses and classes.

How can I help?

Friends and visitors to Bucerias can help in a variety of ways. Educational materials, crafts supplies for the children and office supplies are always needed. Donations of money to purchase needed items is often the easiest way to help with much needed supplies. However if you are planning a trip to Bucerias and have room to bring specific items that are badly needed but may be either too expensive or hard to find in Mexico, please contact the BBCC ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) in advance. As mail service to Mexico is unreliable, and shipping fraught with risk, often the only way we can get specific items is to have someone bring them down in person.

The BBCC is a non-profit association (501c-3) that is recognized by the USA Internal Revenue Service as a legitimate charity for which tax deductions can be credited.
